23 Reasons Why Gone Home Is The Most Important Game You’ll Ever Play

I finished Gone Home last week, but I’d played a lot of it before. Back in 2012, I judged it for the IGF and could tell it was something special. The build didn’t go all the way to the end; I’ve had to wait nearly a year for the plot’s conclusion. I feel like a George R. R. Martin fan.

So I finished it last week, and there have been a lot of things I wanted to say about it. A LOT of things. The difficulty has been working out how to say it. The game’s so narratively rich, so wonderfully constructed, and it’s hard to get across just how well it succeeds in everything it does. I wanted to do it justice.

Finally, now, I’ve worked out exactly what I want to say, and how to say it. So here are 23 reasons why Gone Home is the most important game you’ll ever play.

“That is cool, I love freeware games. I found one called Rorschach on a demo disc, and when you aren’t working you should definitely check that out.

It’s a detective adventure thing, really immersive and the art is in the style of the Rorschach ink blot tests (of course). I spent hours on it before completing it haha”

This is awesome, but sadly just a prototype for a game that, as far as I can tell, is no longer being made. Still worth playing despite some rough edges (namely a bunch of typos and the inability to quit the game via a menu command), all of which are understandable give that it’s a prototype. I LOVE the idea here, and the concept of selecting things from the dialogue to discuss (a similar idea is seen in Glass Rose, fact fans).

*edit* Turns out the guy who designed this game, Jens Andersson, was a key player in developing The Darkness, and worked on the second Monkey Island HD-ification, so I’m going to go over there and have a fanboy moment.
